The Career Services Experience: More Personal and More Valuable in 2012

Perhaps Career Services finally getting its share of the spotlight and I think 2012 is going to be its year.  It won’t just be something colleges and universities contemplate – schools will in fact start putting resources towards Career Services and implementing the processes and tools to more effectively place students.

I recently had the opportunity to contribute an article in Today’s Campus where I talked about “Improving the Career Services Value Proposition for Each Student.” We all know that Career Services is important from a regulatory perspective, but Career Services also can be a valuable differentiator that drives students to your institution.

There is a tremendous opportunity to leverage the Career Services organization within your school to be a true service provider for each individual.  Colleges can become more than job banks, offering a higher level of service to each and every stakeholder.

So how do you get there?

  1. Build the right organization
  2. Know your audiences
  3. Engage your audiences
  4. Evaluate your success

In 2012, let’s make it a point to offer students more than the same career fairs and job interviews as their peers.  Let’s make it a point to move beyond the role of advisor to really facilitate the complete job search and match process.  Let’s make it a point to deliver a truly personalized Career Services experience.

The result will be a win for students, a win for employers and a win for your institution.
